12.5 mile Swim Around Key West race results

Good news: the race was not cancelled due to the stormy weather.  It was very windy, but it was under 30mph by the time we started.  Phew.  It rained hard during the swim, but what did I care, I was in the water! Bad news:  my kayaker lost control of her boat almost right away due to the waves and wind, and couldn’t get back out past the surf.  Thus, I spent the first 4 miles without food or water :(. Good news:  At mile 4, the coast guard stopped me and said  I had to be pulled from the race if I didnt have a kayaker escort me through the harbour (I tried to swim as far as I could and pretend I was not seeing their gestures, but then they pulled right in front of me.  End of pretending ). This sounds like bad news, but at that moment a boat pulled up and offered to escort me. Bad news:  He had no food on board, except a handful of chips, which I ate.  Even the ones that fell in the water, since beggars cannot be choosers.  Plus, I figured the extra salt content would be helpful (my … Continue reading

5 Hour Training Swims

So I have been training for the Swim Around Key West for several months. Since the swim race is 12.5 miles and I will be in ocean between 7 and 8 hours, I needed to ramp up my time in the pool as June 23 approaches. That meant more 3 hour swims, then a few 4 hour swims, and then a 5 hour swim. I have to test not only my own fitness, but the clarity of my goggles, the comfort of my swimsuit, the tightness of my cap and the food I will be ingesting during the swim. My kayaker, Margie Blanco, will be alongside me the whole time for safety, direction and to throw food and drink to me in the water. I cannot touch the boat, so it is a delicate dance to stop for as little as 10 seconds to take a mouthful of calories every half hour or so. The water will be about 85 degree Fahrenheit and the air will be even hotter, so getting dehydrated is a concern, and absorbing 300 calories an hour is a challenge for me. But I have concocted an awesome vegan shake of PureAlmond milk, almond butter, banana … Continue reading

Ask Alexandra July 2014

1) Hi Alexandra, I really like all your activism, to mention one: simple living. It’s not of every celebrity (or not) to be involved in such activities or even believing in them. Do you still train for triathlons? What will be your next athletic challenges ? Cheers, Rafi (from Milan- Italy) Rafi Hi Rafi, I went to Milan for a month to model when I was 17 and I really liked the city. Simple living – you Europeans do it so much better than we Americans! I no longer race triathlons because I had knee surgery in 2004. I cannot run or I will re-injure myself. But I do a long swim every couple years to keep some athletic challenges in my life. In 2012, I participated in the Swim Around Key West (12.5 miles/ 20.1 km). This November, I am planning to swim the Reto Acapulco, 13.6 miles (22 km) in Acapulco Bay. It starts at 3am and I am scared of swimming in the dark, but this makes me want to do it all the more! Grazie for writing. Alexandra 2) Hi Alexandra, I was first made aware of your activism last year after coming across an article … Continue reading

Ask Alexandra – August 2013

1) Hi Alexandra I was wondering where was saving Emily filmed. And happy belated 50th! Donna Hi Donna, Thank you for the birthday wishes. Saving Emily was filmed in Ottawa, Canada. I have filmed a lot of tv movies in Canada’s capital city, and I love the place – A Woman Hunted, The Boy She Met Online, A Lover’s Revenge, Demons From Her Past, A Sister’s Secret. I have filmed many other projects in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal (which is why I am a Canadian resident – I love the country!), but Ottawa holds a special place in my heart. I have been there at all times of the year except in the coldest months of winter, when the river has frozen over and Ottawans skate to work on it. I hear it is so fun at that time of year because of that, although I think I prefer to miss that weather when I am filming 🙂 Best wishes, Alexandra 2) Hi Alexandra, You have mentioned recently that you have a Vitamix blender. I am wondering what model you have and where you can purchase one refurnished like you did? I am vegan and I’ve always wanted to get … Continue reading

Ask Alexandra – October 2014

1) Hi Alexandra Thanks for signing my “Christine”dvd at the 2012 National Plug in Day. Do you know if Plug in America will make a video/documentary about their work..? (With you in it of course;-) Kim Hi Kim, I am so glad you are a fan of Christine and electric cars! There is one behind-the-scenes video of the making of Plug in America’s 8 PSAs about the benefits of electric vehicles. Since I was a producer of the PSAs, I am interviewed, along with Fabio and many other EV drivers who volunteered their time to make these very clever spots. We had dozens of volunteers that day (yep it only took a day to tape them all). You can see more of Plug In America’s video on its YouTube channel. I look forward to seeing you at a PIA event or at a Christine screening! Best, Alexandra 2) Hi Alexandra, just wondering if you and Ian would consider doing the Hawaii Ironman again. It’s been a while and Todd and I need some incentive to start training again. It has been 13 years for me and 15 for him. Great to see you on here and all the inspirational things … Continue reading

Ask Alexandra – July 2012

Question #1: No question really. I just happened to read the article about your brother. I know that it’s a little late… I was watching an old movie of yours “Demons from her past” and I got this nagging feeling. Where have I seen this actress before? I am usually a die hard trivia buff-always the one with useless bits of information. Ha Ha. You actually had me stumped. Anyway I googled and arrived here. I admire all that your family have done in furthering the animal rights cause. Your brother certainly paid the most. While I don’t agree with arson, I do agree that the senseless slaughter of horses is outrageous. Anyway not to ramble on as I just wanted to thank you for your political activism on behalf of antiwar and animal rights. I am also against this senseless war in Afghanistan. And is Iraq any better now after so many lives lost? Probably not. Congrats on having your brother back again. And you truly are amazing. You are older than me and still participating in triathlons. OK one question. I read somewhere that you hold a Canadian work permit. Just curious why? I am Canadian (originally from … Continue reading
