A Day In The Life – February 2002
I woke up today still a little cough-y with this cold I have been battling since last week. The good thing is that I woke up next to my beloved Ian, and the new addition to our family. Her name is Ja Ja (pronounced Zsa Zsa, but she is named after a French cyclist, Laurent Jalobert, whose nickname is Ja Ja) and she is a loving, sweet white cat we got from the local animal shelter 3 days ago. She likes to sleep sqwoonched in between us (Ian never likes anything to come between us, but he seems to be forgiving her for it), and right now she is on my lap as I type this. She purrs like crazy when you pet her, and and although we miss Henry, we are happy to have her as a part of our family.
I go to a 7:30am yoga class and stay in the back of the room so if I cough it isn’t too rude. I decide that I really shouldn’t do any other exercise today so that I can get better more quickly, which takes an act of great willpower. Not to work out for – how long has it been?- 4 days! I worry I shall get fat, but I am eating very healthfully at the present, so I should be proud of myself for being so sensible.
At 11am the local UPN station comes to interview Ian and I about our attempts to live more simply, as they are doing a story on “Voluntary Simplicity”, a movement that believes that a simpler life is a fuller, better life. Ian and I talk about him getting rid of his SUV, and how the furniture we added to our home is all used furniture etc etc. And how I struggle with the desire to have new clothes, but that I also know that I am happier when I dont buy a lot of stuff. Then I have to go change for an interview for “The Best Damn Sports Show, Period”, a show on Fox Sports where I am publicizing the show I host on Women’s Entertainment Network, “Winning Women”. Since they have just told me they want me to do a yoga segment with the 5 hosts (who are all athletes, but have never done a yoga move in their life), I cant wear a short skirt and heels. I actually have a hard time choosing what to wear (hmmm… should I get more clothes??? Kidding), and settle on something I don’t like that much as it seems too conservative, but oh well. I drop by the Earth Talk today office, because we are shooting a show tomorrow and I need more background on our guest. Tom, one of the show’s producers, and his blind dog Morgan are at the office and I get the materials and drive to 20th Century Fox Studios for the taping. I start to feel a little flu-like in the way over, but as soon as I get to the studio, I feel better. Everyone is so nice on the show and behind the scenes! I meet one of the hosts, John Kruk, a former major league baseball player, and the other guest, Jackie Callen, a boxing promoter whom Meg Ryan is playing in a movie. Cool! I love doing these talk shows because you meet such neat people! Another host, D’Marco Farr, a football player, says he had a crush on me when he saw me in “Christine”, and I was tickled. Tom Arnold loves the movie “Dragnet” which is nice, and John Salley (a retired basketball player from the Lakers) gives me a bear hug (he is taaaaallllll) and we chat about yoga as he actually does it with a private teacher every week. I find out my interview segment is only three minutes long, which is disappointing. Then 3 minutes of yoga. The director just wants to see all the big guys falling all over themselves attempting yoga! The interview goes fine (wish I had more time…) and I guess so does the yoga segment, which was silly and a smile. I am glad I did the show.
I drive home and find out I have an audition tomorrow for a pilot. Woo Hoo! I am happy! It is called “Do Over” and it is for the WB network. I am to audition for the part of the Mom with 2 teenage kids, wow. I am in my late thirties…Yikes! Actually I love playing moms – I think some of my best work is with kids. I work on the pages (there is only one scene, which is great) and worry about whether I can work with my acting coach, co-host EarthTalk today and do my audition all tomorrow. Yes I can, if I see Doug (my acting coach) at 8:30am . Phew. Ian and I watch a tape of “Friends” and eat a late dinner, and then we go to bed, with Ja Ja purring between us. And Ian doesn’t move her.
