Ask Alexandra – December 2014

1) I just showed my Dad (Norman Fleishman) your TED TALK – amazing! He worked for Planned Parenthood for many years and helped start the first vasectomy clinic in the country. He co-wrote a book about vasectomy (still available on Amazon) He resonated with your views word for word and was deeply touched as he also has felt strongly about this cause for many years, and felt that NO ONE is talking about it!

Thank you for all your work. Thank you, Saro Deacon

Hi Saro,

Norman Fleishman sounds like my kind of guy! I think his work is wonderful and important. Thank you for watching my TEDx talk.

I also have several short interviews that might be of particular interest to him – I speak with men who have had vasectomies (including my husband, Ian) about their experience. I am hoping to tackle some of the trepidation men have about the procedure, especially their concerns about losing virility and desire. I think this testimony eradicates that fear!

I just read the upcoming edition of Dave Foreman’s book Man Swarm, and I spoke to a filmmaker yesterday who is making a documentary about human overpopulation, so thank goodness you, your father and I are not the only ones deeply concerned about this issue! We just have to keep it up and never stop talking about it as directly as possible.

Best wishes to you for a happy holiday. And hello to your father!

2) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Alexandra to you and your family. I don’t have a question. It is funny I had forgotten that you were in the series Baywatch because I love you for all the movies you have made. Every time I see your name in the cast credits of a movie I know that I will have a great time. Thank you for all the enjoyable times you gave given me. I just watched Christmas Crash on Lifetime today I live in Southern California. It was a great heartwarming movie. Keep living the life you do and inspire all of us to get more involved in saving our world for future generations. Your loyal fan, Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

Thank you for writing. Since I starred on Baywatch 20 years ago, I am not surprised you forgot I was in that show! I would forget too, but I keep getting reminded! (Not that I mind being reminded, as it was a great experience and I still am close to many of my castmates – had email exchanges with both David Chokachi and Jaason Simmons this week, actually).

I am glad you enjoyed Christmas Crash. I enjoyed shooting that movie, especially because my friend Anne Openshaw also worked on that movie. I got a kick out of Michael Madsen too, he made me laugh. He plays a businessman in it, as you know, but they had a devil of a time covering up all his tattoos! And he hated that he could not have a big shootout scene but alas, it is my character who saves the day!

I am currently shooting a movie called Flirting with Madness that I expect will air on Lifetime, and next year you can see me starring in the SyFy movie FireQuake.

    Hi Alexandra,
I want to congratulate you for you veganism, for your fight for animals and humans rights ( Ferguson for example). I admire you so much. That is very important that someone who is famous like you spread the word for peace. Also, you look beautiful and healthy and that the best way to promote veganism. Do your family is vegan ? Your twin ? How long have you been vegan ? Did you follow a vegetarian diet, then a plant based diet before becoming vegan ?
I would love, if one day you come in Paris, we could have a coffee together, or go to a vegan restaurant.
Thanks to be such an inspiration.
    Have a beautiful day.
    Elise

I believe your message would go over better by emphasizing two children per family.

Two children per family is possible. However, you get there by having a few generations of one child families. I believe it would take less than 150 years if we all decided to have one child per family now. (Yeah, good luck with that, right?)

People our age who grew up in the sixties and became teens in the seventies, at the zenith of progressiveness, are more tuned into the message of overpopulation than people in the post-Reagan era.

You mentioned that technology may help. Actually, in just a few years the world will experience the biggest problem to date with machine-man displacement. And it will be exacerbated greatly by overpopulation. That is the rise of the machines — intelligent robots.

Right now there are about a half dozen companies testing their robotic “field hands” to pick a variety of vegetables. Google has self driving cars. Amazon wants to bypass the UPS driver and fly the package right to you. All of this is in the early stages. But for the first time in history, machines will move people out of bandwidth of employment.

Within the next 15 years emigrants from Mexico will no longer be a problem because their jobs will be lost to the machine. People who sew clothes in Malaysia will be replaced entirely with the machine. And so on. When this hits, the message of overpopulation may be heard, but may be drowned out by the message of the “evils of technology”.

Unfortunately your message is lost on too many who just want to cover their ears and say “I can’t hear you”. How can your message be effectively promoted in a post Walter Cronkite world — the last time TV journalism, and journalism in general still held to the early McClure’s Magazine standard of educating the public with the truth.
